Your 9-month-old baby: milestones and what to expect
Nine months brings the CDC checklist plus something most parents don't know: the AAP recommends a developmental screening for all babies at this age — worth asking about at the well-child visit. Crawling styles vary wildly; all roads to moving are normal.

Most babies do these by 9 months (CDC)
Social & emotional: Is shy, clingy, or fearful around strangers · shows several facial expressions · reacts when you leave · smiles or laughs at peek-a-boo · lifts arms up to be picked up.
Language & communication: Looks when you call their name · makes sounds like "mamamama", "babababa".
Movement & thinking: Looks for objects dropped out of sight · bangs two things together · gets to sitting by themselves · moves things hand to hand · rakes food toward themselves · sits without support.
What you might notice
Research described fussy clusters around weeks 26, 30 and 36. Here's the reframe that helps: being shy or clingy around strangers and reacting when you leave are official 9-month milestones. That clinginess is development working, not going backwards. Note: 9 months is also when the AAP recommends a general developmental screening for all babies. Ask at the well-child visit.
What can help this month
Stranger anxiety and distress at goodbyes are normal now, not a step backward. A short, calm, predictable goodbye works better than sneaking away. Extra reassurance and closeness at this stage will not spoil your baby. With crawling or cruising near, it is a good time to secure cupboards, stairs, and loose cords.
And you: The extra clinginess is intense, and it is temporary. Accept help where you can, and remember that being your baby's safe base is exactly the job right now.
Talk with your pediatrician if…
Your baby is missing one or more of the milestones above by 9 months, or has lost skills they once had. That is the CDC's own advice: don't wait, talk with the doctor and ask about developmental screening. And if you're simply worried, that's reason enough to call.
